The exhibit features normal anatomy and physiology of the lungs, highlighting alveolar function. Alveoli are the microscopic air-filled sacs located at the end of bronchioles and have a close interaction with capillaries. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged across the alveolar-capillary membrane, cycling oxygen into and carbon dioxide out of blood.
