The exhibit depicts the surgical insertion of an Occipital Nerve Stimulation (ONS) system bilaterally. ONS is a surgical treatment option for patients suffering from chronic migraine headaches when pharmaceutical treatment has failed. Wire leads are placed via Tuohy needle and secured with anchors in the occipital region in the back of the head. A tunnel connects the wires to a pulse generator battery inserted in the anterior chest. Electrical impulses stimulate the greater and lesser occipital nerves, helping to alleviate headaches.
