The exhibit illustrates an anterior lumbar discectomy and fusion of the L5-S1 level. The preoperative MRI depicts the disc herniation impinging the thecal sac. The surgery is started with the incision over the abdomen. The abdominal contents within the peritoneum are retracted to expose the lumbar spine. The L5-S1 is incised and followed by a discectomy to remove all disc material. The end plates are decorticated with a curette. Fixation of L5-S1is completed with the impaction of cage, bone graft and screws. Finally the postoperative x-rays show the surgical hardware from the lateral view.
