During cataract removal surgery, a small incision is made in the cornea to allow for aspiration of the lens using a phacoemulsification ultrasound probe. The probe breaks up the cataract-ridden lens into pieces and suctions it out of the eye. An intraocular lens implant (IOL) replaces the removed unhealthy lens.
