Development of Subdural Hematoma, Herniations & Infarction
The exhibit illustrates the consequences of intracranial bleeding, depicting the development of subdural hematoma, central and uncal herniations, and infarction. Subdural hematoma is generally caused by a serious head injury and is characterized by bleeding between the brain and dura. The pooling blood in the subdural space can put pressure on the brain and lead to cognitive problems. The increased pressure resulting from the hematoma can cause further problems by leading to hernations and compressed vessels. The compressed vessels cut off blood supply to areas of the brain, which can lead to tissue death and infarction, a type of stroke.
