An intertrochanteric fracture, or hip fracture, is surgically treated with plates and screws. After exposing the femoral head, a guide wire is placed to direct reaming of the fracture site. A lag screw is placed into the femoral head to span the fracture, while a sideplate and screws stabilize the repaired femur.
