Hemiarthroplasty, or partial replacement, of the shoulder is a surgical procedure in which the humeral component of the shoulder joint is replaced with a metal prosthesis. The humeral head is cut off and a metal implant is impacted into the humeral canal using a reamer. With the new prosthetic humeral head in place and glenoid component left intact, the shoulder joint is reduced.
