The exhibit illustrates open surgery of the left knee to treat degenerative patellar arthritis. A medial parapatellar arthrotomy incision is made and the intercondylar surface is prepared using a bone saw and guide. The patellar joint surface is also cut away with a bone saw to allow for insertion of the prosthetic components. A femoral compenent and patellar button are positioned over the intercondylar surface and patellar joint surface and cemented in place. The surgery improves knee joint function and reduces pain by removing degenerative tissue.
