This animation depicts an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C4-5 and C5-6. After retraction and exposure at the C4-C6 levels, distraction pins are placed. Disc material is extracted from the disc space between the vertebrae using rongeurs and the posterior longitudinal ligament and loose fragments are removed. Then bilateral foraminotomies are performed and the end plates are prepared. Prosthetic devices with mixed graft are inserted into the C4-5 and C5-6 disc spaces. Finally a cervical plate with screws is fixed over the prosthetic devices, stabilizing the vertebrae.
