The exhibit illustrates the surgical removal of the left eye in a procedure known as enucleation. The extraocular muscles are separated from the globe and the optic nerve is cut. An implant is inserted in the orbit and the eye muscles are sutured around the implant. Finally a plastic conformer is placed over the sutures to allow the eyelid to move smoothly over the surgical site.
