This animation illustrates a posterior lumbar discectomy and fusion of L4-S1. Pedicle screws are placed at L4, L5 and S1. After removing the spinous processes and the lamina at L4-5 and L5-S1, disc material is excised and the end plates are scraped in preparation. After the cages are impacted into the disc spaces, a burr is used to decorticate L4-S1. To complete the fusion of L4-S1, pedicle screws are connected with rods and bone graft is placed.
